Self Discovery

After mulling over both my own response to the misogyny in Richard Brautigan's poetry and the classes response to my bringing it up. I have decided to write what I see as a feminist version of one of his poems. The original "Discovery" can be found on page 12 of The Pill versus the Springhill mine Disaster.

Self Discovery

The petals of my vagina unfold
like Amelia Earhart
pulling off her goggles.

Is there anything more beautiful
than the nose of a plane
clearing the tops of the trees?

I dig it, Dana. It definitely has a totally different tone coming from a woman. I guess my only question though, is why (assuming you were sort of 'reclaiming' the femininity that could be found in the original "Discovery") you didn't make more changes to the general format of the poem? I understand you were trying to rewrite it from a more feminine perspective and the allusion to Earhart is certainly one that women can be proud of, yet to me your poem seems almost as base as Brautigan's in a sense. I didn't like Brautigan's because it seemed kind of pointless or directionless, yet yours doesn't really divide away from that path.
